The body of Maximo Gordon Edward Macanas was discovered near the mouth of the Klamath River on Tuesday afternoon. He was pronounced deceased later that day.

Macanas had been eel fishing along the shoreline when a large ocean wave, commonly referred to as a sneaker wave, swept him into the Pacific Ocean. He had been reported missing for several days.

Macanas was first observed Tuesday afternoon by a fishing vessel in the area.

Rescue and recovery efforts involved the Yurok Tribe, the U.S. Coast Guard, and members of the public. Authorities expressed appreciation for the coordinated response.

Macanas, a resident of McKinleyville, is survived by his wife and five children.
