Inaugural Roots of Wellness Summit Reshapes Schools’ Approach to Youth Well-Being

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 22, 2025

Smith River, Calif. – On October 16–17, 2025, the Del Norte County Office of Education (DNCOE) hosted the inaugural Roots of Wellness Summit at the Howonquet Lodge at Lucky 7 Casino. This first-of-its-kind gathering, led by Thelma Tomlinson, Supervisor of Youth Mental Health Services, brought together an extraordinary lineup of leaders in student mental health—including state policymakers, program innovators, and educators—to explore practical strategies for strengthening well-being in schools.

The summit convened a diverse range of stakeholders from throughout Northern California, including teachers, counselors, school administrators, behavioral health professionals, and community partners. Over two days, participants engaged in interactive workshops, breakout sessions, and keynote presentations designed to support the social, emotional, and mental health needs of students and staff—particularly those in rural communities.

Keynote speakers included Dr. Sohil Sud, Director of California’s Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI), who delivered a powerful address on statewide efforts to align systems and free or low-cost resources to better serve students, families, and schools.

“The Summit was about building a system of care that meets every student where they are,” said Jeff Harris, Superintendent of the Del Norte County Office of Education. “By bringing people across our region together, we’re creating lasting change in how we support youth.”

Sessions throughout the summit highlighted community-driven models, school-based wellness coaching, youth leadership in suicide prevention, and cross-sector collaboration. Attendees also had the opportunity to network and build regional partnerships focused on sustainable wellness initiatives.

By elevating the conversation on student mental health, the Roots of Wellness Summit marked a significant step toward more resilient and connected rural school communities.
