Harbor District Reviews Grants, Teeters with Tenuous Budget Matters
October 25, 2025 - In a closed session, Commissioners confronted Harbor tenant Fisherman’s Catch for failure to pay debts owed to fishermen totaling approximately $765,000.
Principal owner Peter Nguyen is several months in arrears in bringing his accounts current. Though taking no official action such as eviction, the District is evaluating options and hearing promises to settle his debts to fishermen.
In its regular meeting, the Harbor Board declined to take a stand on a letter to the North Regional Water Control Board (NRWCB) from a member of the public who alleged the water in the Smith River in and around the lily bulb growers is toxic from pesticide use. The NRWCB stated the water in and around the lily bulb fields is perfectly safe for drinking and poses no danger to the public.
Commissioners also handled exigent financial matters. Due to the government shutdown, the beginning of construction on the long-awaited seawall and Citizens Dock pier could not yet be announced.
Harbormaster Mike Rademaker stated the Board intends to make an announcement regarding the renovation of the two recreational vehicle parks—Bayside and Redwood Harbor Village—at its next meeting.
Commissioners will meet again Wednesday, November 12, at 2 p.m. in the Harbor District office, 110 Citizens Dock Road.
